With the L train shutdown averted and Brooklyn Dispensary opening this week, it looks like 2021 will be a good year for New York City weed fans. Citiva, a medicinal cannabis company with a storefront across from Barclays Center at 202 Flatbush Avenue in Atlantic Terminal, opened to the public Dec. 30—a holiday-season gift for Brooklyn weed lovers. The shop is a little different from traditional recreational marijuana stores, since it only sells to people who opt into the state’s medical-marijuana program and have a doctor’s prescription.

The Brooklyn location is one of three licenses granted to the borough under the state’s social equity program, which gave priority to applicants who had weed-related convictions in their past. The other two are in Manhattan, where the city’s first legal marijuana store opened this week, and Queens, where the woman-owned Good Grades is set to open Thursday.

Brooklyn has no shortage of illegal shops selling weed, but Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration and the NYPD are working out how to crack down on them while licensed retail stores get up and running. State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has proposed a law that would make it a misdemeanor to possess small amounts of weed in public, with first-time offenders facing drug rehabilitation or a fine of up to $200.
